Friday, 23 October 2026, is the last day for non-provisional taxpayers to file their 2026 returns. If yours is done, you can stop reading. If it isn't, this is the week to finish it — and if you genuinely can't, here's what to expect and what to do.
What late filing costs
- Administrative non-compliance penalties. SARS can charge a fixed monthly penalty for each outstanding return, ranging from R250 to R16,000 per month depending on your taxable income, for up to 35 months.
- Interest on any tax you owe, running from the original due date.
- Delayed refunds. If SARS owes you money, it will generally not pay a refund while you have outstanding returns.
- Compliance status. Outstanding returns can affect your tax compliance status, which matters if you tender for work or need a tax compliance PIN.
The penalty is per month, so the cost of a return that is a few days late is small compared with one left for a year.
If you can file this week
Prioritise getting a complete, accurate return submitted over a perfect one. If you're waiting for a single certificate, most can be downloaded directly from your bank, medical scheme or retirement fund's online portal in minutes.
If you're going to miss it
1. File as soon as you can. Every month counts toward the penalty.
2. Pay what you owe if you already know you'll have a liability — interest stops when the debt is settled.
3. Request remission if you had a genuine reason (for example, serious illness or circumstances outside your control). SARS considers remission requests on their merits; keep evidence.
4. Ask for a payment arrangement if the amount is more than you can pay at once, rather than leaving it unpaid.
Provisional taxpayers: you're not off the hook
If you earn business, rental or freelance income, your deadline is 22 January 2027 — but January is shorter than it looks. We cover that next week.
